The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) would like to notify the public that the provisional results for the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have been released for both School and Private Candidates.

For school candidates, the Council will send the results to their respective schools through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education. On the other hand, the results for Private Candidates can be accessed on the official website of WAEC at www.waec-gh.org. School candidates also have the option to access their results online via the Council’s website.

STATISTICS

A comprehensive total of 600,900 candidates participated in the school examination, with 300,404 males and 300,496 females attending from 18,993 schools. Among these candidates, 53 individuals had visual impairment, 366 had hearing impairment, and 54 had other special educational needs.

The examination took place at 2,137 centers across the country. However, out of the total number of candidates, 3,366 were absent. For the BECE for Private Candidates, there were a total of 1,839 candidates, comprising 942 males and 897 females. The examination was conducted in fifteen centers, primarily located in the regional capitals. Out of the candidates who entered, only 61 were absent.

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES

After conducting investigations into multiple cases of irregularities identified during the administration and marking of the examination, the 34th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the BECE, held on Monday, 6th November 2023, approved the following measures:

1. The subject results of 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates were canceled due to the use of foreign materials, such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials in the examination hall, or collusion with other candidates.

2. The entire results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate were canceled as they were found in possession of mobile phones during the examination.

3. The subject results of 180 school candidates and 4 private candidates were withheld due to various suspected offenses.

4. The entire results of 110 school candidates and 2 private candidates were withheld due to various suspected offenses.

Additionally, the scripts of 22,270 candidates in specific subjects are currently under thorough examination due to reported cases of widespread cheating. Depending on the outcome of the investigations, their results may either be canceled or released.

CAUTION

All stakeholders are advised by the Council to remain vigilant regarding individuals who offer to enhance results in exchange for a fee. Candidates should be aware that WAEC results are secure and can be verified for authenticity.
