Accra, May 2024 – Laryea Kingston has stepped down as the head coach of Ghana’s U-17 national team, the Black Starlets, following their failure to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. This decision comes in the wake of a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the semifinals of the WAFU B Championship.
Kingston, a former Black Stars midfielder, took on the role with the aim of reviving the Black Starlets and leading them to continental success. Despite a strong start in the group stage with victories over Ivory Coast and Benin, the team faltered in the critical semifinal match. Defensive errors proved costly, with two key mistakes leading to goals for Burkina Faso. Although the Starlets managed to equalize after an early setback, another lapse in defense allowed Burkina Faso to clinch their spot in the final, marking Ghana’s third consecutive absence from the U-17 AFCON.
In a heartfelt statement, Kingston expressed his disappointment and gratitude for the opportunity to coach the team. “It has been an honor to lead the Black Starlets, and I am proud of the effort the boys put in throughout the competition. However, I believe it is time for me to step aside and allow someone else to take over and hopefully achieve the success that has eluded us,” he said.
Kingston’s resignation brings an end to his tenure with the Black Starlets, ushering in a period of reflection and renewal for the team. As Ghana looks ahead, there is hope that new leadership will bring fresh strategies and renewed vigor to the U-17 squad, paving the way for future successes on the continental stage.
