Accra, Ghana – Afrobeats sensation King Promise has opened up about his feelings after losing the prestigious TGMA ‘Artiste of the Year’ award to Reggae/Dancehall powerhouse Stonebwoy. In an exclusive interview with popular YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon, the “Commando” hitmaker shared his thoughts on the competition and his unwavering belief that he deserved the accolade.
“I was hoping to win. I think it’s normal for anybody who has done amazingly well to think so,” King Promise candidly expressed. “I don’t have to say I deserved it for you to even know that I deserved it; because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be in the category.”
King Promise, whose real name is Gregory Bortey Newman, emphasized the competitive nature of awards and the inherent uncertainties. “It’s a competition. It could go your way or might go another way, which is fine. In the end, in my heart, and my fans’ hearts, everybody knew it was supposed to be us,” he stated, reflecting on the emotional journey of the awards night.
Despite his disappointment, King Promise graciously congratulated Stonebwoy on his victory. He highlighted the significance of the TGMAs as a celebration of Ghanaian music and the collective hard work of all artists involved. “For me, it was a nice moment to celebrate Ghanaian music and do what I do beautifully. And when someone else wins, it doesn’t mean the world has to come to an end,” he remarked.
Acknowledging Stonebwoy’s contributions to the music industry, King Promise expressed his respect for his fellow artist. “This is someone who also represents Ghanaian music to a certain level that I respect. So of course I was always going to congratulate him. I always congratulate everybody when they win,” he added.
The TGMA ceremony, held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre on June 1, 2024, saw Stonebwoy triumph over a formidable lineup of nominees including Black Sherif, Kuami Eugene, Nacee, King Promise, and Sarkodie to clinch the ‘Artiste of the Year’ title.
