Kenkey Prices May Rise in Accra Due to Soaring Pepper Costs

Residents of Accra who savor the beloved local delicacy, Ga kenkey, may soon find themselves facing higher prices as kenkey sellers contemplate raising their rates. The reason behind this potential increase? The escalating cost of ingredients, particularly pepper, which has seen a significant surge in price.

A recent investigation by the Mirror Newspaper into popular kenkey spots in Accra unveiled the startling reality: a bag of pepper now commands a staggering GH¢800. Faced with such steep expenses, many kenkey sellers are contemplating passing on the increased costs to their customers by incorporating the prices of pepper, onions, and tomatoes into their overall pricing structure.

For patrons accustomed to the complimentary side of ground pepper with onions and tomatoes that typically accompanies their kenkey, this could mark the end of an era. Traditionally known for its affordability and accessibility, kenkey has long been a staple food enjoyed by many in Accra. Paired with pepper sauce and fried fish, it offers a flavorful and satisfying meal option.

While some vendors expressed concerns about maintaining kenkey’s affordability, others have already made peace with the inevitability of change. A popular family-owned establishment in Jamestown, Kenkey House, pledged to uphold their tradition of providing free pepper and maintaining their current kenkey prices, prioritizing affordability for their loyal customers.

The rising cost of maize, the primary ingredient in kenkey, has also contributed to the potential price hike. As maize prices soar, sellers find themselves grappling with the financial strain, prompting tough decisions regarding pricing adjustments.

While patrons may lament the potential shift in kenkey pricing, the broader economic challenges impacting food affordability in Accra are undeniable. As vendors navigate these turbulent waters, the fate of this beloved culinary tradition hangs in the balance.
