Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team clinched the gold medal at the African Athletics Seniors Championships in Douala, Cameroon, outperforming their long-time rivals, Nigeria.
The Ghanaian quartet, consisting of Ibrahim Fuseini, Isaac Botsio, Edwin Gadayi, and Abdul Rasheed Saminu, delivered an impressive performance with a time of 8.63 seconds, narrowly edging out Nigeria, who finished with a time of 38.84 seconds. This victory comes as a sweet revenge after Nigeria bested Ghana in the 4x100m relay final at the 2023 African Games earlier this year.
Ghana’s relay team has been on a winning streak against Nigeria, having defeated them three times in recent competitions. They secured a notable victory at the Bahamas World Athletics Relays, ensuring their place at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, with Nigeria taking the silver. Ghana continued their dominance by winning the semi-finals of the African Athletics Seniors Championships and again in the final.
In addition to the men’s relay success, Ghana’s women’s 4x100m relay team also shone brightly, winning silver. The team, composed of Hor Halutie, Mary Boakye, Deborah Acheampong, and Anita Afrifa, recorded a commendable time of 43.62 seconds.
Adding to Ghana’s medal tally, high jumper Rose Amoanimaa claimed gold in the women’s high jump, clearing a height of 1.87 meters. Amoanimaa, currently the best female high jumper on the continent, also won gold at the African Games three months ago and will represent Ghana at the upcoming Olympics.
These victories underscore Ghana’s growing prowess in athletics and set a promising tone for their performance in future international competitions.
