Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has experienced a setback in the latest FIFA rankings for March 2024, dropping one place following a disappointing start to the year.
Ranked 68th globally and 14th in Africa, the Black Stars find themselves behind countries like Cape Verde and Burkina Faso. The decline comes on the back of a winless streak and managerial changes within the team.
The team saw two coaches at the helm in the first quarter of 2024. Chris Hughton led the Black Stars during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they failed to secure a victory, resulting in an early exit. Otto Addo succeeded Hughton in March, overseeing friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda. However, the winless trend persisted, with Ghana suffering defeat to Nigeria and settling for a draw against Uganda.
Ghana’s struggles on the field have reflected in their FIFA ranking, with the team now outside the top 10 in Africa. Meanwhile, Morocco leads the continental ranking, followed by Senegal and Nigeria.
In the global standings, Argentina maintains its position as the top-ranked team, with France, Belgium, England, and Brazil rounding out the top five.
The drop in rankings underscores the challenges facing the Black Stars as they seek to regain momentum and improve their performance on the international stage. With the upcoming fixtures and continued efforts to address team dynamics, Ghana aims to climb back up the FIFA rankings and assert its presence in African and global football.
