In a bid to safeguard the rights and well-being of a 12-year-old girl involved in a controversial marriage with the Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua, the Ghana Police Service has taken swift action to ensure her protection.
According to a statement released by the Police, the young girl, identified as Naa Okromo, along with her parents, is currently under their protection as investigations into the contentious marriage unfold.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, as well as the Department of Social Welfare, has initiated measures to provide the necessary support and assistance to the girl during this challenging time.
The move comes in the wake of widespread backlash following the emergence of a video depicting the traditional marriage ceremony between Naa Okromo and the Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, which took place on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Nungua.
Despite the defense put forth by the Gborbu Wulomo, asserting that the girl would not be required to fulfill marital obligations, public outrage has intensified, prompting calls for intervention to protect the rights of the underage bride.
Reports indicate that, in accordance with community customs, Naa Okromo will now bear the title of Naa Ayemoede and is expected to partake in a secondary customary ceremony focused on purification. This ritual is believed to prepare her for her anticipated responsibilities as the wife of the Gborbu Wulomo, which includes the expectation of bearing children.
As the controversy surrounding the marriage continues to spark debates on cultural practices and child rights, the actions taken by the Ghana Police Service signify a commitment to upholding the welfare and rights of vulnerable individuals, particularly children, within the society.
