The Ho Circuit Court has delivered sentences to two out of three suspects arrested by the Volta Regional Police Command for attempting to steal a transformer at Adaklu Tsrefe on October 5.

The two individuals, Sitsofe Agbodza (26 years old) and Deladem Kodzo Tsrakasu (29 years old), were each sentenced to five years in prison by Circuit Court Judge Joseph Nadaado Mac-Ali Junior on November 1. They pleaded guilty to theft and an attempt to damage public property.

The third suspect, Abdul Wahab Seydou, a 20-year-old plumber, will have his sentence deferred for the next three weeks. The circuit court judge has ordered a social inquiry to be conducted on him, with the report to be submitted to the court within the specified timeframe.

As per Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Volta Regional PRO for ECG, the judge clarified that Mr. Wahab is under 21 years of age and a first-time offender. Consequently, the court deemed it necessary to conduct and submit a social inquiry report on the suspect before reaching a final verdict.

Mr. Obeng Antwi recalled that on October 5, residents of Adaklu Tsrefe captured the three suspects who were later handed over to the Volta Regional Police Command for vandalizing the ECG transformer and stealing valuable components from it.

He emphasized the company’s commitment to providing high-quality, reliable, and safe electricity services to its customers. He also highlighted the detrimental impact of such activities on the ECG’s ability to fulfill its core mandate, which includes supplying power to businesses, schools, and hospitals. He urged the public to assist in combating this problem.

Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, the General Manager of ECG in the Volta Region, called upon the public to remain vigilant and help safeguard ECG facilities in their communities. She noted that individuals have been stealing earth wires and service cables from substations and customers, causing power outages. She encouraged people to report any suspicious activity near ECG substations or facilities to the nearest police station or contact ECG through various channels, including the ECG PowerApp and social media handles.

Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo issued a warning to those engaged in these unlawful activities, urging them to stop, as the company would take legal action against such individuals.

She also expressed her gratitude to the community for their vigilance and commended the Ghana Police Service for their prompt response.
