Beverly Afaglo Baah, a Ghanaian actress, finds it astonishing that many young individuals striving to stardom exhibit little or no interest in industry-related activities.
This has frequently been shown during auditions, when aspiring actors appear to know next to nothing about the Ghanaian film industry.
“When you sit as a judge on an audition panel, you realize that most of these aspirants don’t even watch our movies, they don’t know the already established actors, they haven’t been to any premiere before, nothing,” the Agency actress said in an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday, April 11.
“How then do you want to be an actor when you have no prior experience in the field? And the moment you wake up, you decide that you want to become an actress purely for the sake of fame? If you really want to be like us, you should be able to go to the premieres of our movies and stage productions, among other things, and persuade others to do the same.
“They don’t know, but sometimes, while participating in such activities, you might meet a director who just likes your looks and casts you in his or her movie, so show more interest and involvement in what we do.” You don’t just go to an audition and want to be an actress; if you don’t support the business you want to be a part of, there will be none by the time you get in,” she explained.
Beverly spoke on the present film industry, saying, “We thank God for the likes of Akwaaba Magic because if it wasn’t for them, I am sure a lot of people would be out of work because producers aren’t making films as much as they used to.”
“They complain about financial constraints and all that, but people are working because of Akwaaba Magic.” A few people make films, yet half of the time, those who produce are also actors. And, in order to promote themselves, they prefer to use new faces in their products.
“This makes it difficult for a lot of actors who have been around for a long time to get jobs,” she explained. “But that is the current situation; it is time for the new school.”
Beverly’s most recent film, Woe to Men, was produced by Akwaaba Magic and aired on the channel a few times. She previously appeared in The Agency, which premiered in January of this year.
