Rachel McAdams is speaking up about taking a break from acting and some of the roles she claims she turned down.
The actress, best known for her roles in “Mean Girls” and “The Notebook,” is set to star in the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s classic, “Are You There God?” Barb, Margaret’s mother, says, “It’s Me, Margaret.”
In an interview with Bustle published Tuesday, the actress stated that because of her hiatuses from the spotlight, which included a two-year sabbatical, she “felt guilty for not capitalizing on the opportunity that I was being given, because I knew I was in such a lucky spot.”
During her absence from the big screen, the actress said she turned down roles in films such as “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Casino Royale,” “Mission: Impossible III,” “Iron Man,” and “Get Smart.”
“I felt guilty for not taking advantage of the opportunity that was presented to me, because I knew I was in such a fortunate position,” she told the site. However, she admitted that she recognized at the time that some of those options weren’t “jiving” with her personality and what she “needed to stay sane.”
“There were definitely some anxious moments when I wondered if I was just throwing it all away and why?” McAdams explained. “It took years to realize what I was doing intuitively.”
“Certainly there are things like ‘I wish I’d done that,'” she added. “I take a step back and think to myself, ‘That was the right person for that.'”
McAdams, who has a son and a daughter with partner Jamie Linden, is still emphasizing family even while working on projects these days. During the production of “Are You There God? Kayleen McAdams, the actress’ sister, was her on-set makeup artist in “It’s Me, Margaret.”
Kayleen McAdams revealed to Bustle that she and her sister shared a residence throughout production.
“Our [eldest children] are best friends, and our two younger children are three months apart, so they’re also very close,” she explained. “Then Rachel and I get to be best friends who go to work every day [while] they play.”
She went on to say that she and her star sibling were both nursing while “Margaret” was being filmed, so they’d sneak away during McAdams’ breaks, grab a snack, and pump together.
“Then she’d go into this setting [on set] where she was parenting a pre-teen daughter.” “It’s funny to be living that life while also looking ahead,” Kayleen McAdams remarked.
