The highly-anticipated grand finale of the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) is facing a disruption due to a legal challenge initiated by Prempeh College, one of the participating schools. The school has taken its case to the High Court in Accra, seeking an injunction on the event.
This legal action stems from a disagreement that arose during the semi-final round regarding an answer provided by a representative from Prempeh College. While the school maintained that their answer was accurate, the quiz master disagreed.
Dissatisfied with the outcome, Prempeh College submitted a petition to Primetime Limited, the organizers of the NSMQ. However, the company rejected the petition, citing satisfaction with the rationale provided by the NSMQ consultant and the quiz mistress for withholding points from Prempeh College for the disputed question.
Following the dismissal of their petition, Prempeh College, as stated in a release by the school’s NSMQ coordinator, PB Damoah, expressed their intent to exhaust all available avenues to seek justice.
As the NSMQ grand finale is scheduled for October 30, 2023, the aggrieved school has turned to the court to attempt to halt its proceedings. Prempeh College contends that they would have remained in the competition if the answer they believed to be correct had not been rejected by the quiz mistress.
The legal action includes a request for an interlocutory injunction against the defendant, its agents, assigns, workmen, and privies, with the intention of preventing the organization of the Grand Finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz scheduled for Monday, October 30, 2023, at the National Theatre at 2:00 pm, or on any other date before or after that mentioned date, pending the final resolution of the matter. The writ, filed on behalf of Prempeh College by lawyer Kwame Boateng Atuahene, specifies these details.
The case for the injunction is set to be heard on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
