The Accra Regional Police Command has made a formal request for the organisers of the upcoming #DumsorMustStop protest, led by actress Yvonne Nelson, to relocate their event and adjust its timing. The planned demonstration, aimed at voicing grievances over the government’s handling of erratic power supply, is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024.
In a meeting held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Regional Police Headquarters, concerns were raised regarding the potential impact of the protest on public order and safety. The Command specifically highlighted the initial choice of venue, Revolution Square, which is in close proximity to Jubilee House, the seat of government and a designated security zone.
Citing potential risks to public safety, the police recommended relocating the protest to Independence Square. Additionally, concerns were raised about the proposed duration of the protest, with the planned end time of midnight deemed potentially compromising to security. Adjusting the timing was advised as a precautionary measure to mitigate potential security risks.
This development follows a statement released on May 9 by actress Yvonne Nelson, announcing plans for the vigil to be held from 8:30 am to 12 midnight at Revolution Square. Nelson has called for public support to echo the turnout of the 2015 dumsor protest, which she also spearheaded.
While reaffirming their commitment to upholding law and order while supporting peaceful protests, the Accra Regional Police Command awaits a response from the protest organisers regarding the recommended changes in venue and timing.
Yvonne Nelson’s call to action reflects the mounting frustration among Ghanaians over the persistent energy challenges facing the nation. The recurring power outages, commonly known as “dumsor,” have been disrupting businesses and daily life since late 2023, with the situation worsening in 2024.
Despite government assertions that these outages do not constitute “dumsor,” many citizens remain unconvinced, drawing parallels to the crisis experienced in 2015.
Meanwhile, during a discussion on United Showbiz, Habiba expressed her reluctance to participate in any intended ‘dumsor’ protest, stating that it would be futile. However, the ongoing debate underscores the growing urgency to address the underlying issues contributing to Ghana’s energy crisis.
