Director of Sports at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, Timothy Kwabena Mensah has declared the University’s readiness to host the upcoming GUSA Games.
He was joined by the Ashanti Regional Acting Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Emmanuel Kojo Appiah, in touring the facilities to be used for the games.
After a two-year hibernation due to the COVID-19 pandemic which informed the suspension of university sports in Ghana, all is set now for the 2022 Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) games at the KNUST.
Sixteen institutions across the country will participate in this year’s games, which is expected to attract about 4,000 student-athletes between November 4 and 21, 2022.
Ahead of the biennial sporting event, the Acting Ashanti Regional Director of NSA, Emmanuel Kojo Appiah joined the Sports Director of KNUST, Timothy Kwabena Mensah to inspect the facilities that will be used for the games.
Emmanuel Kojo Appiah is impressed with the level of preparation for the games.
“I was directed by the Director General of NSA [Prof Twumasi] to come and do this short inspection and so far from what we’ve seen, it is so impressive.
“I think KNUST is ready for the GUSA Games and as host, what they’ve already put in place is impressive.” He said.
Director of Sports of KNUST, Timothy Kwabena Mensah declared, the University is well prepared and ready to host another successful competition.
“I should say that we are ready to host the games. Almost all the courts and fields are ready, we are just left with some few touches and we are good to go.
“Then when you come to the athletes themselves, everybody is ready, as at now, we are playing matches and you know when you start playing friendlies, it means you are ready.
“So, KNUST is really poised and ready for action come November 4-19.” He said.
The inspection of the facilities saw the Board Chairman of Ghana’s para-sports, Dr Iyke Donkor donating some fertilizers and other materials to the Sports Directorate of the University to aid their pitch preparation.
The 18-day competition will include football, athletics, volleyball, hockey, handball, basketball, netball, goalball, badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis and beach volleyball.
