Award-winning Ghanaian musician, Sarkodie, has entered the conversation surrounding a claim that a government agency spent a hefty sum of 100,000 cedis on a mere three-minute documentary.
The controversy began when an account named “Ghana Crimes” posted this revelation on November 7, asserting that the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) had allocated 100,000 cedis for a three-minute video documentary on management. The production was purportedly awarded to Yaw Pare Photography through a sole-sourcing arrangement, as outlined in an audit report.
As the social media post began to circulate and attract attention, Sarkodie decided to weigh in with a conditional defense. He emphasized the significant cost of expertise within the creative industry and backed up his stance by referring to a recent production he had financed. In his tweet, Sarkodie commented, “Don’t know the details and if there’s evidence that she lied then that’s a problem, but if people are doubting a 3-minute doc could cost that much, then y’all need some education… my tour ‘announcement’ video, not a documentary or music video, was close to that amount (of course, camera, concept, etc., will play a part). Our space (the creative industry) is very expensive.”
Sarkodie’s input has ignited a lively debate, with more critics than supporters, but it has certainly shone a spotlight on the intricacies of expenses in the creative field.
