“Nurses and Midwives Issue Ultimatum: Government Faces Escalated Strike Threat”
The Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association have raised the stakes in their battle for recognition and employment. With over 75,000 graduate nurses and midwives left in limbo due to the government’s failure to provide financial clearance and permanent positions, tensions are reaching a boiling point.
In a stern warning directed at the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance, the association has made clear their intentions to escalate their industrial action unless their demands are met. Mubarak Suale, the Vice President of the association, minced no words in conveying the seriousness of their stance.
In an interview with Citi News, Suale emphasized that mere peaceful protests won’t cut it this time. The association seeks concrete action from the authorities, not just empty promises. Suale stated firmly, “We are not just interested in picketing or demonstrating… If the silence continues… we would rather be on the streets.”
This sentiment echoes the frustrations felt by nurses and midwives across the country, as exemplified by the Northern Region Coalition of Nurses and Midwives. The coalition recently took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of action, particularly in assigning them to health facilities.
With tensions rising and patience wearing thin, the government is under pressure to act swiftly and decisively to avert a full-blown crisis in the healthcare sector. The ball is now in their court as nurses and midwives stand united in their demand for justice and employment security.
