Breaking Historical Boundaries: Dr. Bawumia Emerges as NPP Presidential Candidate for 2024 General Election
In a historic turn of events, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shattered conventional barriers by becoming the first non-Akan to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into a general election. This landmark achievement comes after Dr. Bawumia served as the running mate to President Akufo-Addo since 2008.
The suspense came to an end with the just-concluded NPP presidential primaries, where Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious, positioning him to go head-to-head with former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 general election.
The hotly contested field featured a formidable lineup of candidates, including the outspoken Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, former Minister for Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former Mampong Member of Parliament Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Provisional results revealed Dr. Bawumia’s resounding victory, with a commanding 61.43% of the total vote, securing a whopping 118,210 votes. His closest rival, Mr. Agyapong, garnered 37.41% of the vote, translating to 71,991 votes. Dr. Afriyie Akoto trailed in third place with a distant 0.76% or 1,459 votes, while Addai-Nimoh secured just 0.41% of the vote with 781 votes.
A total of 193,339 delegates actively participated in the presidential primary, resulting in 94.63% voter turnout. Out of the cast votes, 192,441 were valid, and 898 were rejected.
Dr. Bawumia’s victory was widely anticipated, with Hon. Ken Agyapong emerged as his closest contender in the race. As the 2024 election looms, political enthusiasts can anticipate a closely contested showdown, as both Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Mahama will proudly bear the flags of their respective parties in the quest for victory.
