Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called upon the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to peacefully hand over power following the 2024 general elections.
Addressing the press on Thursday, May 9, Nketia emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power, particularly if John Dramani Mahama emerges victorious in the elections. Expressing concerns over the conduct of the Electoral Commission (EC), Nketia urged against any potential interference that could undermine the electoral process.
“We do not expect the Electoral Commission to act as the conduit through which Akufo-Addo will implement his avowed determination not to hand over power to the visionary, experienced, and trustworthy John Dramani Mahama,” Nketia asserted.
Highlighting the significance of the upcoming elections, Nketia stressed that the 2024 electoral process would not follow the usual routine. He called upon the NPP to choose peace and cooperation for the greater good of the nation.
In addition, Nketia outlined the NDC’s commitment to transparency in the voter registration process, vowing to oppose any attempts by the EC to diminish transparency. He urged NDC registration agents nationwide to utilize the party’s advanced technology systems to ensure the integrity of the registration exercise.
“We wish to serve notice and notice is hereby served that NDC registration agents across the country will resist the EC’s clandestine attempts aimed at diminishing transparency in the voter registration exercise,” Nketia declared.
Furthermore, Nketia extended an invitation to chiefs, opinion leaders, and faith-based organizations to join the NDC’s advocacy for increased transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
As the 2024 elections draw closer, Nketia’s call for a peaceful transition of power and commitment to electoral integrity underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles and fostering national unity. With stakeholders across the political spectrum urged to prioritize cooperation and transparency, Ghana prepares for a pivotal moment in its democratic journey.
