“MTN Ghana Blocks 4.8 Million Unregistered SIM Cards: A Step Towards Enhanced Network Security”
In a bid to adhere to regulatory mandates and bolster network security, MTN Ghana has taken decisive action, blocking 4.8 million subscribers who failed to re-register their SIM cards with the Ghana card, as mandated by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
This significant move underscores the telecom giant’s commitment to compliance with regulatory standards while ensuring the integrity of its network. The directive from the NCA stipulated that all telecom operators must re-register SIM cards using the Ghana National ID card.
MTN Ghana initiated the re-registration process in October 2021, with the goal of updating its subscriber database with accurate and verified information. The nationwide exercise concluded at the end of May 2023, with the telecom giant blocking a total of 5.4 million SIM cards that were not registered with the Ghana card by the deadline.
Despite efforts to encourage compliance, only 600,000 SIM cards were successfully re-registered, leaving a significant portion of subscribers—4.8 million—failing to meet the re-registration requirement.
The consequence of these actions was a 6.3% decrease in MTN Ghana’s subscriber base, which stood at 26.8 million by the end of 2023.
