A man in Malawi has been found guilty of insulting President Lazarus Chakwera after sharing a TikTok video depicting an animated character with Chakwera’s face engaged in quirky dance moves.

Sainani Nkhoma faced conviction by a court on Thursday for posting the video along with derogatory remarks about the president on a community WhatsApp group. The incident was reported to the ruling Malawi Congress Party by members of the group in the central town of Mponela, leading to Nkhoma’s arrest on Tuesday night.

Judge Talakwanji Mndala deemed Nkhoma’s actions as inappropriate during the court proceedings. Sentencing has been slated for next week, with the judge cautioning that Nkhoma could face a fine of approximately $3,500 or up to six years in prison.

President Chakwera ascended to office in 2020 following a historic rerun of the 2019 presidential poll mandated by Malawi’s Constitutional Court. Initially declared the victor, former president Peter Mutharika’s win was overturned due to evidence of widespread irregularities.

Reflecting on his electoral success, President Chakwera expressed jubilation, stating, “I’m so happy I could dance all night.”

The case draws attention to issues of free speech and the limits of expression in Malawi, it also underscores the complexities surrounding digital media and political discourse.

With sentencing pending, the outcome of Nkhoma’s case will undoubtedly spark further debate on the balance between individual rights and respect for authority in the nation’s evolving democratic landscape.
