Olympique Lyon has signed highly-rated Ghanaian winger Ernest Nuamah on a permanent transfer following his impressive loan stint. The 20-year-old initially joined the Ligue 1 giants on loan last season, where he made 33 appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

Ernest Nuamah: Lyon sign Ghanaian youngster on permanent deal

Nuamah emerged as one of Lyon’s standout players, contributing significantly as the club climbed from the relegation zone to secure a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League, finishing sixth in the league. His stellar performances convinced Lyon to make his move permanent, signing him from Belgian side RWD Molenbeek.

On Sunday, the French club announced that Nuamah has signed a four-year contract. The statement read: “CONFIRMED: Ernest Nuamah has joined us on a permanent deal until.”

Nuamah’s permanent move to Lyon places him among the ranks of Ghanaian football legends such as Abedi Ayew Pele, Michael Essien, and John Mensah, who previously donned the Lyon jersey. Abedi Pele joined Lyon in the 1993/94 season after a successful tenure with Olympique Marseille. Essien spent his formative years at Lyon, winning two league titles before transferring to Chelsea in 2005. Mensah joined Lyon for a €8.4 million fee from Stade Rennes in 2008 and spent four years with the club.

Nuamah now aims to build on his impressive debut season in the French top-flight. The young winger is already a full international, having featured in Ghana’s recent victories against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) during last month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
