Edward Kofi Osei, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate in the Kumawu Constituency, has confirmed his resignation from Sunday’s primary.
According to the former Managing Director of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), his decision arises from party leadership’s reservations about his dual citizenship.
“I resigned to restore order to Kumawu and the party.” “I am a Ghanaian citizen with a US passport,” he told a portion of the media in Kumawu on Wednesday, April 19.
Despite holding dual citizenship, lawyer Edward Osei ran in the 2020 NPP primaries in Kumawu but lost to the late Philip Basoah.
“This was made possible by our Supreme Court’s interpretation of Article 94(2a) of the Ghana constitution, which talks about having allegiance to another country.” Ex Parte Zanetor Rawlings of the Republic v. High Court confirmed that a person must qualify as an MP at the moment they submit their form to the EC.
“A person cannot be disqualified if the EC has not opened nominations.” In 2020, elections were held on June 20, 2020, and nominations were opened on October 9, 2020, a full five months later. So, if I had won the primaries in 2020, I would have had a full five months to verify my candidacy,” he explained.
