Manchester, England – Rising star Kobbie Mainoo, who has recently earned a call-up to the England national team, revealed that he once contemplated representing Ghana. However, the talented midfielder emphasized that it has always been his dream to don the England jersey.
Mainoo, 19, made a significant impact in the English Premier League last season with 33 appearances across all competitions. His standout moment came when he scored in the FA Cup final, helping Manchester United secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester City, lifting their second major trophy in two seasons under manager Erik ten Hag.
Mainoo’s impressive performances earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, where he featured in their opening-day victory over Serbia at the 2024 European Championship.
In a candid interview shared by Sky Sports, Mainoo expressed his pride in his Ghanaian heritage but reaffirmed his commitment to playing for England. “Obviously I’m proud of my Ghanaian heritage and there was speculation and whatnot but it’s always been a dream to play for England so I’m happy to be here,” he stated.
When asked if playing for Ghana was ever a serious consideration, Mainoo responded, “I considered but I want to play for England.”
Despite his decision, Mainoo’s connection to Ghana remains strong. Both of his parents hail from the West African country, adding a layer of complexity to his national allegiance.
The young midfielder’s potential has drawn comparisons to legendary players. Ex-France international Claude Makelele recently praised Mainoo, likening him to former Chelsea and Ghanaian star Michael Essien. “In England’s midfield, I would go for Rice, Bellingham, and this boy in Manchester [Mainoo]. He is very good, so young, but he has demonstrated that he can play. He is young but has quality. I think he will add some spice to the midfield,” Makelele told the Daily Mail.
Reflecting on Mainoo’s style, Makelele added, “I would say Michael Essien. He needs to learn more from Michael Essien. He is young, you know, and he has a great future ahead of him. Good dribbler, running, fighting. I won’t say he’s like me but he can be. But I see him progressing and he can be a very good midfielder for the national team.”
Mainoo’s rise in English football and his decision to play for England highlight the ongoing dialogue about dual-nationality players and their choices. As he continues to develop, both England and Ghana will undoubtedly watch his career with great interest.
For now, Mainoo is focused on his role with the England national team, aiming to contribute significantly in the European Championship and beyond. His journey from Manchester United’s youth ranks to the international stage serves as an inspiring testament to his talent and dedication.
