Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has called on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acknowledge the current economic challenges facing Ghana and offer an apology to the citizens as part of their campaign strategy for the December 2024 General Elections.

Ken Agyapong urges NPP to admit mistakes, apologise to Ghanaians for economic hardships

In a candid address at the launch of the NPP Ablekuma South Constituency election campaign, Agyapong emphasized the importance of humility and transparency. “Let’s go out there with humility, apologize to Ghanaians, and admit your mistakes before you can convince anybody to vote for you. If we ignore the hardships Ghanaians are going through, they will never accept what we are saying. You first have to admit that there are hardships. Let’s give NPP another chance, and I know we have all learnt our lessons,” he urged.

Agyapong, known for his straightforward and often controversial statements, stressed the need for unity within the party to secure victory in the upcoming polls. “We are all not going to sit back; we will all support Dr. Bawumia [NPP flagbearer] to win,” he advised, underscoring the collective effort required to ensure success.

The NPP has been under intense scrutiny over the country’s economic difficulties. The party attributes these challenges to global factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which have led to inflation, unemployment, and widespread economic hardship. Despite these external factors, critics have accused the NPP of economic mismanagement.

As the December 2024 General Elections approach, the NPP is gearing up for a critical campaign. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the current Vice President and the party’s flagbearer, is expected to lead the charge. Agyapong’s call for an honest approach and internal unity highlights the party’s strategy to regain the trust of the electorate.

Kennedy Agyapong’s appeal to the NPP reflects a broader sentiment within the party that addressing past mistakes and showing a willingness to learn from them is crucial. His remarks come at a time when the NPP is seeking to rebuild its image and present a united front to Ghanaians who have been affected by the economic downturn.

As the campaign season intensifies, the NPP’s ability to admit its shortcomings and propose viable solutions to the country’s economic issues will be pivotal in garnering support and securing a mandate for another term.
