Ghana’s Black Starlets have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2024 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship after a decisive 2-0 victory over Benin at the University of Ghana Stadium on Tuesday. This win sees them topping Group A with a flawless record, following an earlier 5-1 thrashing of the Ivory Coast.
The Black Starlets opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Mark Kagawa Mensah, who was expertly set up by Joseph Narbi after a brilliant solo run. Just three minutes later, Theophilus Ayamga doubled Ghana’s lead, capping off an impressive team move that began in their own half. The sequence involved 27 passes before Ayamga unleashed a shot from outside the box, securing a 2-0 lead.
Under the guidance of coach Laryea Kingston, the team demonstrated exceptional composure and skill, maintaining control throughout the match. While they were less clinical in the second half, creating but not converting several chances, the Black Starlets held firm to clinch a comfortable victory.
Ghana’s performance in the group stage has been dominant, finishing ahead of both the Ivory Coast and Benin. This sets them up for a semi-final clash against the runner-up of Group B, which includes Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo.
The WAFU Zone B U17 Championship not only offers regional bragging rights but also serves as a pathway to the 2024 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). With their current form, the Black Starlets are well-positioned to continue their journey towards continental glory.
