Ghana’s Black Princesses have been drawn into a challenging Group E alongside Japan, New Zealand, and Austria for the 2024 U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Colombia.
The draw, which featured the now-expanded 24-team tournament, was held in Bogota on Wednesday. This marks the seventh consecutive appearance for the Black Princesses at the World Cup, but they face a tough road ahead.
Under the guidance of coach Yusif Basigi, the Black Princesses secured their spot in the tournament with an impressive 7-1 aggregate victory over Senegal in the final round of qualifiers in January. Since then, they have been in excellent form, clinching the women’s football competition at the 2023 African Games.
However, their group stage opponents bring significant pedigree to the tournament. Japan, the 2018 champions, pose a formidable challenge, while New Zealand and Austria are also expected to provide stiff competition.
Joining Ghana as Africa’s representatives are Nigeria, Cameroon, and Morocco. Cameroon finds itself in Group A with hosts Colombia, Australia, and Mexico. Morocco will compete in Group C against Spain, the USA, and Paraguay. Meanwhile, Nigeria faces a tough Group D, which includes Germany, Venezuela, and Korea Republic.
The complete draw for the 2024 U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup is as follows:
– Group A: Colombia, Australia, Cameroon, Mexico
– Group B: France, Canada, Brazil, Fiji
– Group C: Spain, USA, Paraguay, Morocco
– Group D: Germany, Venezuela, Nigeria, Korea Republic
– Group E: Japan, New Zealand, Ghana, Austria
– Group F: Korea DPR, Argentina, Costa Rica, Netherlands
As the Black Princesses prepare for their World Cup journey, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how they will navigate the challenges of Group E and hopefully advance to the knockout stages.
