Ghana Health Service Launches Nationwide COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign Amidst Rising Cases
In response to a recent uptick in COVID-19 infections, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced the initiation of a nationwide vaccination campaign aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. Over the past week, the GHS reported 31 new cases of COVID-19 within the country, with Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, the Programs Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunization at the Ghana Health Service, clarifying that these cases are not severe.
Addressing the media in Accra, Dr. Amponsah-Achiano emphasized the need for continued vigilance against the virus, stating, “COVID has come to stay with us. It is part of us.” He announced the commencement of a national COVID-19 vaccination exercise scheduled to run from May 5th to May 9th, 2024, as part of the GHS’s strategies to reduce COVID-19 to the barest minimum.
The vaccination campaign comes amidst increasing infections across healthcare facilities, prompting the GHS to take proactive measures to mitigate the surge in cases, particularly in Greater Accra, where the highest numbers have been reported. Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, highlighted the virus’s rapid transmission and stressed the importance of widespread vaccination to curb its spread.
“We are getting a few cases reported in parts of Accra and a few other regions,” Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe stated during a media briefing. “And it brings to bear the fact that Ghanaians need to be vaccinated.” He urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign scheduled to take place from May 4th to May 10th, 2024.
The vaccination campaign underscores the GHS’s commitment to combating the COVID-19 pandemic and protecting public health. With the virus continuing to pose a threat, strict adherence to safety protocols and widespread vaccination efforts are essential to safeguarding the health and well-being of all Ghanaians.
