In a thrilling international friendly clash held in Marrakesh, Morocco, Ghana’s hopes of clinching a win were dashed as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Uganda on Tuesday.
Despite taking an early lead through goals from Jerome Opoku and Jordan Ayew, the Black Stars were unable to secure victory as strikes from Steve Mukwala and Muhammad Shaban saw both teams share the spoils.
With the memory of their recent defeat to rivals Nigeria still fresh, Ghana, under the guidance of coach Otto Addo, entered the match against the Cranes with a burning desire to return to winning ways. Addo made significant changes to the lineup, with five alterations from the previous encounter. Notably, Jojo Wollacott replaced Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal, while Denis Odoi and Ebenezer Annan earned starting berths in defense.
The match kicked off with Ghana displaying early dominance, controlling possession and dictating play. Their efforts paid off swiftly as Opoku found the back of the net with a header from Ayew’s cross just six minutes into the game. However, Uganda managed to level the score in the 21st minute after Annan conceded a penalty, allowing Mukwala to convert from the spot.
Undeterred, Ghana regained the lead five minutes later when Ayew calmly dispatched a penalty after Odoi was fouled in the box, showcasing his clinical prowess from the spot once again. Despite Uganda’s increased pressure in the second half, Ghana appeared to have the game under control following strategic substitutions by Addo.
Nevertheless, the Cranes fought back valiantly, capitalizing on defensive lapses to snatch a late equalizer through Shaban, ensuring the match ended in a deadlock. The result leaves Ghana without a victory in the March international break, raising questions about their form ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.
As the Black Stars reflect on missed opportunities and defensive vulnerabilities, attention turns to their preparation and strategy for the crucial qualifying matches, where they will aim to redeem themselves and reignite their pursuit of World Cup glory.
