Ghanaian Former Catholic Priest Shares Challenges of Transitioning to Married Life in New Role as Anglican Clergy
In a captivating revelation, Rev Canon Charles Amankwah, previously dedicated to celibacy during his 17-year tenure as a Catholic Priest, candidly recounts the hurdles he faced in adapting to married life after transitioning to Anglicanism. Joined by his wife, Ruth Amankwah, on a recent episode of The StandPoint show hosted by Oheneyere Gifty Anti, the couple delved into their heartwarming journey of matrimony.
Having served as a Catholic Priest for nearly two decades, Rev Canon Amankwah made the significant transition to becoming an Anglican priest, where he currently serves as the diocesan evangelism director and choir director at St. Mary Anglican Church in Atechem, Dunkwa-On-Offin, Central Region, Ghana. Reflecting on his past assignments, he notably served as an assistant parish priest at Holy Trinity Parish in Agormanya and later as parish priest at St. Barbara Parish in Akosombo, both in the Eastern Region.
Rev Amankwah’s decision to switch denominations stemmed from a misalignment between his burgeoning prayer ministry and the doctrines of the Catholic Church. However, embarking on this new chapter came with its own set of challenges, particularly in matters of the heart.
Recalling the difficulty of proposing to his now-wife, Ruth, Rev Amankwah humorously confessed that it was his father who took on the role of suitor on his behalf. The couple, who have been married for a decade, admitted to abstaining from intimacy prior to marriage, a testament to their devout commitment to their faith.
Despite their mutual dedication, Rev Amankwah revealed the apprehension he felt on his wedding night, grappling with the prospect of physical intimacy after years of celibacy. “My first night as a married man was not easy,” he shared. “I just couldn’t imagine going naked before my wife. I had to pray to muster the courage to have canal knowledge of my wife. And since then, anytime we’re going to have an affair, I pray before the act.”
Throughout his journey, Rev Amankwah found guidance in prominent figures within the Catholic Church, notably receiving mentorship from Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Charles Palmer-Buckle, during his formative years. Beyond his pastoral duties, Rev Amankwah is a prolific author, with numerous publications to his name, including his upcoming book, “God has not finished with you yet,” slated for release this month.
Rev Amankwah’s academic achievements further underscore his commitment to theological education, holding a Master’s Degree in Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry from the Catholic University College of Ghana, Sunyani, as well as diplomas from the University of Cape Coast and the University of Ghana, Legon.
As he continues to navigate the intricacies of married life and ministry, Rev Canon Charles Amankwah serves as an inspiring testament to the resilience of faith and love amidst life’s transitions.
