In a momentous occasion steeped in tradition and cultural significance, former President John Dramani Mahama, alongside Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has initiated the construction of a new palace for the esteemed overlord of Gonja.
The sod-cutting ceremony, held on Friday, witnessed a gathering of esteemed guests, including various Guan and Gonja paramount chiefs, executives of the Guan Congress, executives of the Gonjaland Youth Association, members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the people of Damango, all united in their commitment to honoring the heritage of the Gonja Kingdom.
At the heart of the event was the unveiling of plans for the new palace, envisioned as a majestic symbol of Gonja’s rich cultural legacy. Former President Mahama, in his address, underscored the deliberate choice of architectural style, drawing inspiration from the Sahelian design reminiscent of the Gonja’s origins in the Mande region around Mali.
“So, if you look at the architecture, you will think you are in Timbuktu or Songhai, tracing the history of the Gonja people,” Mr. Mahama remarked, emphasizing the profound connection between architecture and identity.
The significance of the new palace extends beyond its physical structure, as it serves as a beacon of cultural preservation and historical continuity for the Gonja people. Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I expressed gratitude to Mr. Mahama for his unwavering dedication to advancing the Gonja Kingdom’s development, offering prayers for his continued success.
Amidst the ceremonial pomp and reverence, the overlord emphasized the pivotal role of the new palace in safeguarding the Gonja heritage and honoring the legacy of Sumaila Ndewura Jakpa, the visionary founder of the Gonja Kingdom.
In a gesture of solidarity and support, former President Mahama, who is financing the project, assured the people of its timely completion by October of this year.
