Renowned surgeon and former Minister for Environment, Science Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, has added his voice to the growing calls for a review of Ghana’s flagship ‘Free SHS’ policy.
In an interview on Joynews, Professor Frimpong Boateng acknowledged the positive aspects of the policy but emphasized the need for a review to address its challenges after over seven years of implementation.
“The Free SHS policy, though commendable, has some challenges that need fixing. It’s only imperative that we review the program to address these issues and improve Ghana’s education sector,” he stated.
Expressing his belief in the necessity of a review, Professor Frimpong Boateng highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges facing the policy to ensure its effectiveness. He stressed the need to consider changes or adjustments to enhance its impact.
Acknowledging the affirmative response to whether the policy is facing challenges, the former minister emphasized the importance of periodically reviewing activities to ensure optimal performance. He cited issues such as school feeding as areas that may require attention.
The discussion around the review of the Free SHS policy has gained momentum, particularly in light of the promise made by former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, to review the policy if he regains power. This promise has sparked debate, with the ruling New Patriotic Party issuing heavy criticism.
