Accra Sports Stadium Plunged into Darkness as ECG Disconnects Power Over Debts

The iconic Accra Sports Stadium finds itself shrouded in darkness as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) takes decisive action, disconnecting power due to unpaid debts exceeding GH¢400,000.

Reported by Joy Sports, the stadium, a hub of sporting activity and national pride, has been grappling with financial woes, leading to the suspension of electricity supply by the country’s power distributor.

Despite undergoing renovations in preparation for the prestigious 2023 Africa Games and scheduled to host the Black Queens’ Olympic Games qualifier against Zambia, the stadium’s operations have been marred by recurrent power disconnections.

This isn’t the first time the Accra Sports Stadium has faced such a predicament. Just last year, in March 2022, ECG enforced a similar blackout due to outstanding debts totaling GH¢508,000. The National Task Force of ECG made a dramatic appearance, severing the stadium’s ties to the national grid.

Nene Shadrack Mase, leader of the Task Force, expressed dismay at the situation, highlighting that the stadium management had defaulted on payment despite utilizing electricity for the past 10 months.

This latest setback adds to the challenges faced by the Accra Sports Stadium, which has already been closed to Ghana Premier League matches since December, further underscoring the urgent need for financial stability to ensure the seamless operation of this iconic sporting venue.
