In response to recent power supply disruptions impacting healthcare delivery, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, the Health Minister-designate, has called on health facilities to prioritize the use of alternative power sources, particularly generators, to ensure uninterrupted patient care.

Addressing concerns over the detrimental effects of intermittent power cuts on healthcare services, Dr. Okoe-Boye emphasized the importance of preparedness during a press briefing at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He urged hospitals to proactively utilize reliable backup power sources such as generator sets to mitigate the impact of power outages on patient care.

“Because someone did a video of one minute, and 40 seconds and said lights have gone out, everybody goes emotional,” Dr. Okoe-Boye stated, highlighting the need for objective discussion and assessment of the situation. He acknowledged that while the country may experience challenges with power availability, hospitals, as integral components of the nation, are not exempt from such issues.

Drawing attention to the necessity for hospitals to maintain functional generator sets, Dr. Okoe-Boye emphasized the importance of ensuring that standby power plants are operational and well-maintained. He urged hospital management to address any issues promptly and to engage with the Ministry of Health for support if needed.

“We should not get sensational. Let’s stick to the essentials,” Dr. Okoe-Boye urged, encouraging a focused discussion on the availability and functionality of standby generators in healthcare facilities. He proposed conducting audits to assess the status of power backup systems in hospitals and taking proactive measures to address any shortcomings.

The recent power outages have disrupted normal business operations across various sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, IT, and service providers. Dr. Okoe-Boye’s call for hospitals to prioritize alternative power sources reflects the broader challenges faced by industries reliant on electricity and underscores the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the impact of power disruptions on essential services.

As hospitals navigate the challenges posed by unreliable electricity supply, the emphasis on preparedness and proactive management of backup power sources is critical to ensuring continuous and uninterrupted healthcare delivery. Dr. Okoe-Boye’s advocacy for a pragmatic approach to addressing power supply issues in hospitals signals a concerted effort to safeguard patient care and uphold healthcare standards amidst prevailing challenges.
