Alice Nana Dearing, the dynamic Olympic swimmer of British-Ghanaian heritage, renowned for her prowess in open water events, has embarked on a new venture to inspire and empower the next generation of swimmers with the launch of the SWYM (Swim With Your Meaning) Academy in Accra, Ghana.

With a vision to ignite a passion for swimming and foster a culture of aquatic excellence, Dearing aims to make a splash by supporting up to 250 individuals over the next four years through the SWYM Academy.

Dearing’s journey to the forefront of swimming history is emblematic of her unwavering dedication and pioneering spirit. In June 2021, she etched her name in the annals of sports history as the first black female swimmer to represent Great Britain in the Olympics, showcasing her exceptional talent and breaking barriers on the world stage.

Beyond her remarkable achievements in the pool, Dearing has been a tireless advocate for inclusivity within the sport. Her efforts were recognized in 2023 when she was featured on the BBC’s Powerlist of exceptional individuals, cementing her status as a trailblazer and role model for aspiring athletes worldwide.

The launch of the SWYM Academy marks a significant milestone in Dearing’s mission to promote swimming excellence and empower communities. In partnership with Achimota School, a renowned institution with a storied legacy of producing notable leaders, the SWYM Academy will offer comprehensive training programs designed to develop technical skills, endurance, and mental resilience among participants.

“Choosing to partner with Achimota School was a natural choice for SWYM,” remarked Dearing, emphasizing the alignment of values and commitment to excellence shared by both organizations.

Each cohort of the SWYM Academy will undergo a 10-week fully funded training program, led by certified swim coaches, aimed at instilling essential life skills and nurturing talent. Thanks to partnerships with Nike Swim and swim brand Soul Cap, participants will receive essential gear, ensuring they are fully equipped for their aquatic journey.

For Dearing, the launch of the SWYM Academy holds special significance, as it represents a tribute to her Ghanaian heritage and a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to her mother, whose support was instrumental in her swimming journey.

“Ghana holds a special place in the SWYM story, being my mother’s homeland. Without her, my swimming journey wouldn’t have begun. Now, it’s my turn to give back,” Dearing added, underscoring her deep-rooted connection to the land of her ancestors and her commitment to fostering a legacy of aquatic excellence in Ghana.

As the SWYM Academy sets sail on its maiden voyage, it heralds a new era of opportunity and empowerment for aspiring swimmers in Ghana, guided by the visionary leadership and unwavering dedication of Alice Nana Dearing.
