New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia asserted that former President John Mahama will not return to power to account for his previous tenure.
Speaking at a meeting with the clergy in the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the achievements of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration and contrasted them with what he described as the failures of Mahama’s presidency.
“It’s a choice between myself and the former president… But he has been president before. I haven’t been president before,” Bawumia declared. Emphasizing the significance of his candidacy, he urged the electorate to consider the potential of new leadership. “You’ve seen his handwriting. You haven’t seen my handwriting yet… For him, it’s just bye-bye after four years. No accountability. But for me, I have to come back and answer your questions in four years.”
Dr. Bawumia’s message focused on the economic narratives of both administrations. Under Mahama’s leadership, Ghana faced severe economic challenges, including high inflation, a depreciating currency, and the notorious “dumsor” power outages. Bawumia argued that these issues reflected mismanagement and inefficiency.
In contrast, he praised the current administration’s economic management, citing a stable currency, reduced inflation, and fiscal policies aimed at growth. He highlighted initiatives like the Planting for Food and Jobs program and the One District One Factory project as evidence of tangible progress.
“Under President Akufo-Addo, we’ve seen economic stabilization, infrastructure development, and impactful social interventions,” Bawumia said. He stressed that the current administration’s successes should not be overlooked in favor of a return to the past.
As the December 2024 general elections approach, Bawumia’s pitch is clear: his presidency would bring fresh leadership and accountability, contrasting with Mahama’s previous tenure and its associated economic struggles.
