Dalvin Azumah Nelson Junior, son of the legendary Azumah Nelson, has reignited his passion for boxing, setting his sights on emulating the illustrious career of his father.
Nelson Junior embarked on his boxing journey at the amateur level back in 2017, under the tutelage of renowned coach Lartekwei Lartey. However, the balancing act between academics and the rigorous demands of the sport proved challenging, leading him to step away from boxing upon graduating from the University of Ghana.
Just weeks ago, it was revealed by Azumah Nelson himself that his son had walked away from boxing, deeming it unsuitable for the offspring of a celebrated boxing icon. Yet, Nelson Junior defied the odds and staged a triumphant comeback over the weekend, securing a hard-fought victory over Philip Quansah via a split decision at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
With his father, a former WBC featherweight and super featherweight champion, proudly looking on, Nelson Junior marked his return to the ring after nearly five years away from the sport. Judges awarded him a narrow 2-1 victory, sparking hopes of a resurgence in his boxing career.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of his bout, Nelson Junior expressed his aspirations to follow in his father’s footsteps, acknowledging the challenges ahead but remaining steadfast in his determination. “I’m looking to turn professional soon and take it to the next level… Hopefully, one day I’ll get there. It’s not easy, but I will do my best,” he affirmed, as quoted by Ghanaweb.
Meanwhile, Azumah Nelson, a titan of the boxing world in the 1980s and 1990s, cemented his legacy with multiple WBC titles and a reputation as one of Africa’s greatest boxers. With an impressive record of 39 wins, 2 draws, and just 6 losses in 47 bouts, the 65-year-old boxing icon has etched his name into the annals of sports history. His illustrious career culminated in his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York, a testament to his enduring impact on the sport.
