Anthony Baffoe Slams Delay in Payment for Black Queens Amid Impressive Streak
Former Ghanaian football star Anthony Baffoe, also serving as president of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), has strongly criticized the delay in compensating the senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, despite their stellar performances on the field.
As the Black Queens gear up to face Zambia in the first leg of the 2024 Olympic Games third-round qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, February 23, Baffoe has called upon the Ministry of Youth and Sports to honor their commitments and promptly pay the players.
Under the leadership of coach Nora Hauptle, the Black Queens have enjoyed an exceptional run, triumphing in 10 out of 11 matches and impressively scoring 34 goals. Despite their achievements, the team remains unpaid, with bonuses owed from qualification matches played last year.
Reacting to reports suggesting the team was contemplating boycotting the upcoming game against Zambia due to unpaid dues, Baffoe took to social media to express his discontent, urging respect and prompt payment for the players who have demonstrated unwavering dedication and prowess.
“Respect them and pay them! They have gone all out all this while! They have done a fantastic job,” Baffoe emphasized in his post.
Echoing Baffoe’s sentiments, former Ghanaian midfielder Yussif Alhassan Chibsah emphasized the significance of the match against Zambia and urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure timely payment to avoid dampening the players’ spirits.
The issue of delayed payments for the women’s national teams has been a recurring concern, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) pledging to settle all outstanding bonuses. Gifty Oware-Mensah, Chair of the Black Queens management committee, assured that payments would be made before the crucial match against Zambia.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming showdown, the spotlight remains on the authorities to fulfill their obligations and provide the Black Queens with the recognition and compensation they rightfully deserve.
