Kwaku Ansa-Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has labeled President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration as the most corrupt in Ghana’s history. Despite initial promises to combat corruption upon taking office, the government has faced significant criticism from stakeholders for failing to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people.
Since his re-election in December 2020, President Akufo-Addo has been embroiled in a series of high-profile scandals, undermining his administration’s reputation and raising concerns about governance and transparency. Ansa-Asare asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government lacks a genuine commitment to fighting corruption.
In an interview with Citi News, Ansa-Asare expressed his dismay at the current administration’s approach to combating corruption. “I don’t have the statistics, but watching the political terrain and the various approaches to the fight against corruption, this is the worst government we have ever had to combat corruption,” he stated. “Any government that shouts from the rooftop about fighting corruption will be the worst in terms of fighting corruption. Akufo-Addo’s government is the worst ever, the most corrupt government we have ever had.”
Comparing President Akufo-Addo to his predecessors, Ansa-Asare claimed that the current leader ranks as the worst the country has seen. “I have witnessed [former late President J.J] Rawlings, [former President J.A] Kufuor, [former late President J.E] Mills, and [former President John Dramani] Mahama. If I have to score them and award them marks, the last and worst will be the current government. Followed by John Mahama’s government. Mills will be first, Kufuor second, Rawlings third, Akufo-Addo last, in terms of grade one to four,” he added.
Issues of transparency, governance, and accountability remain at the forefront of national discourse, with Ansa-Asare’s comments fueling further debate and criticism of the current administration’s handling of corruption.
