Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticized Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, for his negative remarks regarding the reported selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December 7 elections.
Expressing his disappointment at Parliament House on Thursday, June 27, Afenyo-Markin reminded his colleague MPs of the importance of adhering to party rules. “We should all respect party rules. You cannot go out of your way to describe your colleague in a manner that is unacceptable,” he stated.
He urged Appiah-Kubi to be more considerate in his public statements, emphasizing the need for unity. “We are in this together. There is no perfect person in this world. Let us be measured in the language we use. The flag bearer has the confidence of the party, and I believe he will use the structures of the party in making his decisions,” Afenyo-Markin added.
Earlier, on Accra-based Joy FM, Appiah-Kubi had expressed his personal disapproval of NAPO as the running mate, stating, “If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him (Napo). He is not my preference.”
Appiah-Kubi’s comments have also provoked a group called Concerned NPP Members in the Ashanti Region, who are demanding immediate action against him. The group urged the NPP parliamentary majority and national leadership to call Appiah-Kubi to order, accusing him of showing gross disrespect not only to NAPO but also to the President, Vice President, and the party at large.
The Concerned Ashanti NPP members praised NAPO as an excellent choice for the running mate position, asserting that he has the capability to support the flagbearer and the party in securing significant victories in the presidential and parliamentary elections, as well as to serve effectively as Vice President.
