Abu Kamoko, the son of renowned Ghanaian boxer Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has secured a significant victory at the ongoing 2023 African Games

guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal. Competing in the 86 kg cruiserweight boxing category, Abu emerged victorious in his bout on Sunday, advancing to the semi-finals.

In achieving this feat, Abu Kamoko has matched the record set by his father, who clinched a bronze medal at the 1999 African Games in South Africa. However, the young Kamoko now has the opportunity to surpass his father’s achievement by aiming for either a silver or gold medal in the final of the 86kg cruiserweight boxing event.

Abu’s success adds to the growing list of Ghanaian boxers who are poised to make their mark at the African Games. Alongside Theophilus Allotey and Mohammed Aryeetey, who have also secured bronze medals by reaching the semi-finals in their respective weight categories, Ghana’s boxing contingent demonstrates strong potential for further success.

Notably, Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi is among the six Ghanaian boxers who have progressed to the quarter-finals in their weight divisions. With the likes of Amadu Mohammed, Abdul Walid Omar, Joseph Commey, Henry Malm, and Daniel Plange also in contention, Ghana’s boxing prospects are bright.

25 years after Bukom Banku’s Bronze medal win at the All African Games in Johannesburg, his son Abu Kamoko is continuing the legacy.
