According to a new study, merely offering tobacco e-cigarettes may deter most teenagers and young adults from vaping.
When 1,414 e-cigarette users aged 14 to 21 were asked what they would do if they could only purchase tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes, more than 70% answered they would cease smoking.
When menthol tastes were added as an option, this number plummeted to slightly under 40%.
In the 30 days preceding the study, all of the participants had used an e-cigarette at least once per day.
Fruit-flavored vapes are the most popular among adults and young people, according to the Department of Health and Social Care, followed by menthol or mint.
The study discovered that teens and young adults who favored vaping fruit or sweet flavors were the most likely to cease vaping if only tobacco and menthol were available.

Dr. Alayna Tackett, assistant professor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Center for Tobacco Research, said, “The restriction of availability for certain e-cigarette e-liquid flavors has been considered by various regulatory agencies.”
“Our team was interested in polling children and young adults to learn what people could choose if regulatory laws restricted e-cigarette e-liquid tastes to menthol and/or tobacco flavors.
It seems that non-tobacco flavors may be significant for the interest in and continuing use of e-cigarettes among this group of teenagers and young adults.
Additionally, they discovered that young adults who used flavors with cooling additives, like fruit ice, had a higher chance of quitting vaping than those who used menthol flavors.
Fruity flavors with a menthol or artificial cooling ingredient make up fruit ice flavors.
To determine whether this would be the case in practice, researchers must look at places that have implemented a flavor restriction policy to see if what people say matches what they do.
According to the ASH-Youth 2022 poll, 8.6 percent of 11 to 18-year-olds in England vaped occasionally or regularly in 2022. This represents an increase from 4% in 2021.
The experts stress that reducing e-cigarette use among young people is a critical public health aim.
“Many adults prefer using non-tobacco flavors to switch from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes,” Dr. Tackett remarked.
Flavor restriction laws should enable adults who want to choose possibly less dangerous alternatives to combustible cigarettes while also taking into account the best approaches to safeguard the public health.
