Title: Ghana Police Arrest 46 More Suspects in Connection with Bepong Chief’s Palace Attack
In a decisive move to address the disturbing incident at the Bepong Chief’s palace in the Eastern Region, the Ghana Police Service has apprehended an additional 46 suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to 71.
Announcing the latest developments on Monday, February 5, 2024, the law enforcement agency revealed that these individuals are linked to the violent attacks on the Bepong Chief’s palace and several police officers on February 4, 2024.
According to ACP Grace Ansah-AkrofiI, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, the suspects, along with others still at large, launched an assault on the palace, resulting in injuries to seven individuals, including five police officers. The attackers also inflicted damage on police vehicles, motorbikes, and private vehicles, as well as sections of the palace and adjacent buildings.
“Upon initial investigation and screening of the suspects, 40 of them who have so far been identified to have played various roles in the attacks and have been linked to available evidence have been detained to assist investigation,” stated ACP Grace Ansah-AkrofiI.
The incident unfolded when police officers responded to a call to apprehend a murder suspect, Kwasi Nyarko, who was held at the Bepong Chief’s palace awaiting police arrival. However, tensions escalated as members of the community, including those in police custody, attempted to take matters into their own hands, leading to the violent clash with law enforcement.
All suspects will face justice as they are processed through the legal system, affirmed the Ghana Police Service. This swift action underscores the police force’s commitment to restoring peace, upholding the rule of law, and safeguarding both citizens and law enforcement personnel.
