Ryan Giggs set to face trial

A judge has ruled that Ryan Giggs will face a retrial over allegations that he attacked and controlled his ex-girlfriend as well as assaulting her sister.

At a short hearing on Wednesday at Manchester Crown Court, the judge set a new trial date for July 31 next year.

After nearly 23 hours of deliberation, the jury in his first trial was discharged last week when they were unable to reach a verdict.

Giggs has been accused of assaulting his former partner, Kate Greville, causing bodily harm, using controlling and coercive behaviour against her from August 2017 to November 2020.

The former Manchester United star was also charged with assaulting Ms Greville’s younger sister, Emma.

Giggs has denied the allegations made against him.

Giggs has said he is “disappointed” that a retrial has been ordered, adding: “I am confident that justice will eventually be done and my name will be cleared of all the allegations.”

On the evening of November 1, 2020, he was accused of headbutting Ms. Greville on purpose at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester.

At his first trial, Ryan Giggs admitted to being unfaithful in all of his previous relationships, but denied ever physically assaulting a woman or using coercive behaviour.
