Economic Hardship Prompts Kumasi Residents to Defy Authorities and Consider Crocodile Consumption
In the suburb of Oduom in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, an unusual situation unfolded as some residents refused to return a stray crocodile to the zoo authorities, instead vowing to eat it. Their decision, they claim, stems from the challenging economic circumstances they are currently facing.
The bizarre turn of events began when the residents captured the reptile, initially believing it to be an alligator. However, upon discovering that it was, in fact, a crocodile, some of them insisted on killing and preparing the creature for food.
In conversations with Citi TV, these residents expressed their disappointment, as they had anticipated enjoying alligator meat rather than crocodile. Peter Opoku, one of the residents, elaborated on their rationale for not returning the crocodile to the zoo authorities. He explained that the prevailing economic hardship in the country had pushed some of them to the brink of despair. Instead of resorting to suicide, they opted to consume the crocodile meat and potentially face their fate.
The authorities at the Kumasi Zoo have urged Ashanti Region residents to notify them whenever they encounter stray wild animals to prevent potential dangerous incidents.
It’s worth noting that in various parts of the world, particularly in tropical regions with many crocodile farms, people commonly consume crocodilian meat, which includes both alligators and crocodiles.
