John Dumelo Sparks Controversy with Comments on Anti-Gay Bill

Actor and politician John Setor Dumelo has found himself at the center of heated discussions on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), following his recent comments on Ghana’s controversial “anti-gay bill.”

Critics online have accused Dumelo, who is also an aspiring parliamentarian, of inconsistency in his stance regarding the contentious bill, officially known as the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.”

The bill, currently undergoing parliamentary review and awaiting presidential approval, has generated both domestic and international criticism over concerns about potential human rights violations.

During a recent interview on Star FM, Dumelo indicated his alignment with the position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the bill, emphasizing the party’s stance on safeguarding “family values” in Ghana. However, he stopped short of explicitly stating his own position, citing respect for individual privacy.

Dumelo’s remarks have not gone without scrutiny, as social media users have pointed out his previous portrayal of a gay character in the 2010 Nigerian film “Men In Love.” The film explores themes of marital discord exacerbated by the arrival of a gay friend under a curse.

The actor’s comments have sparked lively debates online, with users expressing a wide range of opinions on his stance and past roles. The discussions highlight the sensitivity and complexity of LGBTQ+ rights and legislation in Ghana, reflecting broader debates on human rights and societal values.

As the discourse continues to unfold, Dumelo’s remarks serve as a focal point for examining the multifaceted dynamics surrounding LGBTQ+ rights advocacy and legislation in the country.
