Ghanaian Blogger Arrested for Publishing Explicit Images: Unlawful Use of Cyber Security Official’s Pictures

Prominent Ghanaian blogger Sammy Kay, also known as Samuel Dortey Kumah, has recently been arrested and handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. The arrest stems from allegations of publishing sexually explicit images and the unauthorized use of pictures belonging to a Cyber Security Authority official.

Last week, a sexually explicit video involving socialite Abena Korkor made rounds on the internet, sparking a wave of speculation. Abena Korkor accused two individuals of being behind the video and implicated a security official associated with the cybercrime office at the Ghana Police Service. This revelation added fuel to the controversy surrounding the explicit materials.

On Wednesday morning (November 15, 2023), another sexually explicit video surfaced on social media platforms. The video carried a tag connecting it to the aforementioned security officer. Sammy Kay, the Ghanaian blogger, reportedly published the explicit images and associated them with pictures of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) official.

In response to these developments, the Cyber Security Authority issued a press release explaining the grounds for Sammy Kay’s arrest. The statement clarified that his actions involved the “unlawful use of the images of Cyber Security Authority (CSA) officials.” Furthermore, the CSA emphasized that the tagging of the explicit images to their officials was a misrepresentation and criminal attribution, completely dissociates itself from such actions.

Following significant backlash, Sammy Kay took action by removing the controversial image from his Instagram account. He also issued an apology, expressing remorse for his previous post and acknowledging the mistake in linking the images. The blogger took responsibility for the error and expressed regret for the implications caused by his actions.

The arrest of Sammy Kay, the Ghanaian blogger, highlights the seriousness of publishing explicit images and the unauthorized use of official pictures. The controversy surrounding the explicit videos involving Abena Korkor and the subsequent linking to a Cyber Security Authority official has sparked public concern. The Cyber Security Authority’s response, clarifying their detachment from the explicit material and dissociation from criminal attribution, emphasizes the need for responsible digital practices. As the investigation unfolds, the implications of this case will likely shape discussions around online content and the importance of respecting individuals’ privacy and official images.
